2016 Strawberry Picking

Hey guys, I go back and forth, I have so many posts I want to do…but I’m so behind I don’t know if I try to keep chipping away or just start fresh today and do things as they come. I’m not going to lie it’s hard doing posts from months ago and with life being so busy things keep getting pushed back even more. But it’s also fun because it brings you back to those fun moments…so we’ll see. But today I am doing an old post, because one of the best things about having a blog is looking back each year and seeing how the kids have grown doing something we do yearly.

Our family tradition of strawberry picking this year was awesome because I was able to meet my dad, aunts and some of my cousins. My love for strawberry picking did originate from my Grandma Stiemsma (my dad’s mom) so it only seemed appropriate that we all went picking together in her honor.

My cousin Katie who is an awesome photographer, incredible with kids and just a good egg was along and graciously had allowed me to post some of her photos here. Thank you so much Katie!

IMG_0764 i actually took this one (the only one, eeck!) aren’t they so sweet though!

A family tradition that we always look forward to in the summer is strawberry picking.  Last year it was so much fun seeing Nola understand the concept of picking strawberries and the joy of eating them.  This year was just as fun, but what was interesting was that she didn’t think or even try to eat any of the berries until at the end of our trip.  Isn’t it crazy how kids change once we try to start teaching them rules, manners, etc.  It’s so necessary, but being completely carefree also gets lost sometimes.  Have no fear she still got her fair share of berries and it didn’t take us long to eat the 5 lbs that we picked in the next couple of days.

My Grandma Stiemsma was the sweetest person in all the land (truly) and all of my cousins would agree.  I loved her so much and really miss her.  Strawberry picking was her thing and it’s fun thinking about her while we go picking each year.

And here’s the POST of us strawberry picking last year!

Strawberry Picking

Do me a favor and if you have a 2 year old or can borrow a 2 year old go strawberry picking!!  A couple of weeks ago we took Nola and it was such a great time!  At this age she gets what’s going on and loved finding the berries to pick, but of course her favorite part was testing them out of course.  And then we had to explain you can’t try everyone…and well that’s a glimpse of a life with a toddler.  But all in all it was awesome.

At this age it’s a little tricky because lots of things are so much easier if we do them on our own, or we think they will never remember this anyway.  But I’m a huge advocate on doing as much as you can with these little 2 year olds.  Activities, chores or vacations with toddlers often result in it becoming messy, taking too long and just being so much more work, but in those moments they are in absolute bliss, full of wonder and are memories my husband and I will always remember (or if i don’t, can always go back to this blog!).

The place we go picking is South of us toward Santa Cruz, off of Highway 1 across from the ocean.  It was a sunny breezy day where we could wear long-sleeves and be comfortable.  I just feel the need to describe that we could see the ocean, it was our ideal weather and I was with my most favorite people.  It was a good, good day.
