2017 Halloween

Can I just say, as normal, I don’t have the time to be keeping this little ‘ole blog up, but when I’m here, it feels good. I like editing photos and reminiscing moments in our lives. Who knows if I actually will be able to keep it up because I’m juggling a lot of balls up in the air at the moment, but I hope I can.

Another year, another halloween, which by the way how in the world is it already November?!? Per usual halloween is a big thing around here, I mean how could it not, it allows our littles to dress up and pretend to be something else AND THEY GET CANDY. This year the kiddos decided to be characters from the movie Wreck it Ralph. I am not lying when I say Jonas wore his Wreck it Ralph costume 4 days in the row (with washing in between we aren’t that bad, well actually I may be that bad, but not my kids) and I have purposely have not been washing it so we can have a break. Where Nola takes taekwondo they did a trunk or treat. It was a great because our kids could see so many people dressed up and they were also able to hand out candy. Sadly there aren’t a ton of kids that come to our side of the tracks for Halloween which is so disappointing because we think it’s so much fun handing it out! But besides the cold weather, lack of kids coming to our door and too much leftover candy, we had a great year and they are already scheming what they will be next year.

Here are photos of my real life Wreck it Ralph characters (and I may be bias but think they are cuter than the cartoon characters) if you care to see:

trying out the hands! it was touch and go with these hands, at first he wasn’t going to wear them, but he eventually came around. he’s right at that sensory age where lots of things bother him dearly. also those hands took an entire day to make, that’s in between doing mom duties of course.

for those of you who aren’t familiar with the movie, here you go! can i just mention, those candy barrettes in nola’s hair we made, we dyed her skirt brown and basically scoured the internet for those tights and sweatshirt. it looks like a simple costume, however it was not easy finding everything. and may i just add those costumes at target and costco are a steal compared to making your own. but i don’t want to complain, i really do love putting them together. in his entire get up! that night was sooo cold that eventually the kids wound up in the trunk. not impressed with being in the school halloween parade because daddy is a good one, he got into character too, he’s fix it felix. really just watch the movie if you have no idea what i’m talking about. we trick or treated with neighbors and it was fun times chasing after our kids. kidding, it was a lot of fun.

2016 Halloween

Halloween is a pretty big deal around here. The fact that my kids get to dress up in a costume and people will give them CANDY…well that’s a good good day in their opinion. And frankly seeing how happy they are, it makes our day pretty great too.

This year Nola wanted to be a tiger again. At first we were encouraging and suggesting that she be something different. But she held strong and then we realized if this is what she wants why are we trying to change her mind? This is where I got lazy though and since Nola was going to be the same thing, my thinking was, ‘well then Jonas can wear the same costume too.’  But the day of Halloween I had mom guilt and frantically made him a firetruck costume because of his love of all things trucks. That was a mistake on my end because it made me really stressed that day and the anxiety didn’t subside until after the kids were sleeping?? I will be first to admit I have issues. And ultimately resulted in me not enjoying the night as much as I could have 🙁 . Jonas liked the truck, but he’s little, I’m sure he would have been just as excited being a tiger and mobility would have been 100x easier as well. Steps in that costume was HARD.

We really love our new neighborhood and feeling thankful these days, but that night we missed our old digs a bit. Our old neighborhood is a more established neighborhood and more dense so it just seemed easier to go trick or treating and was more action packed maybe? We may got 4 kids who came to our house after we got back and frankly that night kind of seemed anti-climatic??? But at the end of the day, Nola told us she had a super fun night, so regardless on how we felt I’m really glad she wasn’t feeling the same feels. Kids are really great like that.

Here’s some photos of the night if you care to see: dsc_0132 this was the past weekend when we carved our pumpkins. we feel pretty spoiled with all this amazing fall weather that is sticking around. we were actually able to carve our pumpkins outside this year!! and can i say i live for matching pajamas!!! dsc_0136 my little firetruck and tiger dsc_0145 the,’ok get this over with mom’ photo dsc_0153 his hat stayed on as long as it took to take this photo dsc_0159 dsc_0176 dsc_0177 dsc_0179 dsc_0181 dsc_0192 checking out their candy and the only night of the year where jonas will have candy for dinner, eeck!!

2015 Halloween

I don’t know about you guys, but for us, our 3 year old seemed to change her mind on what she wanted to be for Halloween daily. It honestly was starting to stress me out a little because regardless of if I was going to make or buy the costumes, it takes time, especially when we try to do a family theme…that all stems from our daughter’s decision. Clearly that girl has too much power in our house. We would love to decide what her costume would be, but if she doesn’t like it she won’t wear it, hello cute dresses in the closet she won’t put on.

One day we decided to go to Halloween Express for some inspiration and there Nola had it narrowed down to super woman or a tiger. We were like, “this one!?! or this one?!? this one?! or this one?!!! Nola just pick one!!!!” In case you are wondering, yes, this how it is every morning getting dressed too, bless that sweet girl’s heart and ours as well. After much deliberation we are happy to report she went with the tiger costume. This is definitely is the year of the tiger for Nola since she also had a tiger birthday party earlier this year. I saw a baby tiger costume that I grabbed for Jonas and done and done! Though my crafting loving heart was a little sad because I wouldn’t be making them, I was also relieved and glad I wouldn’t have to be worrying about it anymore! With Halloween parties at school and events in the community this costume is in high demand much earlier than the 31st! And I have to say Nola wore that costume around the house and as pajamas for two weeks straight, yes you heard that right we choose our battles around here, that costume was worth every penny!

Here’s some photos if you care to see:

IMG_7609 This was at Nola’s school. We decorated a table and handed out some candy. As you can see we also caught some of the cutest tigers.

CJ and I had such a fun day and I know I’ve said it before, but I never was the biggest Halloween fan, but since having kids it is sooo much fun. We asked Nola what was her favorite part of the day and she said handing out candy.

Here’s 2014 halloween and 2013 halloween in case you want to look back!

Halloween at the Zoo – Henry Vilas

Happy Friday everyone!!  The weather is getting colder here and I’ve been pretty strong and optimistic about braving this weather, but for the record I miss San Francisco weather so much!  Living there has probably ruined me forever.

Here’s a couple of things I’ve been loving or up to these days:

– The upside to this cold weather is plaids and flannel.  In fact the whole family is sporting flannel these days and we love it!

– I finally joined a Mom’s Group in our area and excited to start weekly playdates again!  We also enrolled Nola into a dance class.  She loves being around kids so much and want to give her as much fun as we can before baby #2 gets here and the cold winter.

– I don’t sleep well at night these days and so in the wee hours I have written down our list of Christmas presents we need to get.  I’d love to be finished by the end of this month.  Have you started yet or done with yours already?

– Busy painting a cabinet for our living room, need a love seat reupholstered, have to hang more stuff on the walls, curtains in the playroom and going to attempt to make a headboard for Nola’s big bead is on the list of what I want to accomplish before this baby comes.  Hope I can get it all done!!

–  Speaking of Nola’s bed, she now crawls out of her crib regularly now.  I didn’t want to transition her into a bed until after the baby came but I don’t want her hurting herself one of these days when she’s crawling out.  Have I mentioned she’s quite the acrobat and has amazing upper arm strength!!  We bribed her with fruit snacks to show us how she climbs out, it’s quite the balancing/hanging like a monkey act.

And not to bombard you with more Halloween photos but I wanted to post a couple more from our trip to the zoo awhile back.  Madison had a lot of Halloween events going on and the weekend before Halloween we took Nola to the Henry Vilas Zoo’s halloween event.  Honestly it’s nice to have a couple of events to go to because then you feel you are actually getting use out of your costume!

You kind of envision how these events are going to go and how this day went down is not what I had thought at all.  Don’t get me wrong, Nola had an awesome time, but it didn’t involve really seeing the animals this time, or being dressed up, or the candy (which I’m so glad) but rather it involved finding, following and if possible touching every Elsa character from Frozen.  At first I was kind of annoyed by this, but then realized let’s just go with it.  In fact we made it a game for ourselves on finding them as well so we could use them to direct her to where we wanted to go.  “Oh look Nola there’s an Elsa on the carousel, or look Nola there’s an Elsa at the petting zoo.”  We can play this game too!

She loved the Elsa’s so much I kind of felt bad we just didn’t have that be that for her costume for this year.  But she still had fun being a care bear on Halloween so it all worked out.  I also may have caved and gotten her an Elsa costume anyways for dress-up…

Just a side note, but why does all the little girls love Elsa so much?  We saw a couple of Anna’s but nothing in comparison to the Elsa’s.  Personally I love Anna’s character so much better, she’s funny, loving and sacrificing, I’m just saying.  Sorry I just had felt I had to put that out there.

Here are some photos of the day if you care to see:

DSC_0197 DSC_0202  Pretty much our day, following an Elsa! DSC_0199 DSC_0214 DSC_0218 and if you live in WI you know these are the sausage mascots for the Milwaukee Brewers.  Nola kept on asking what are those?!?…honestly it was hard explaining to a toddler.  But yes Nola WI people like their beer and sausages.

Hope you all have a great weekend and doing something fun!!

2014 Halloween

I never considered Halloween a holiday that is one of my favorites, but that all changed this year.  In fact I can’t wait until next year already.  Our halloween was SO MUCH FUN!  I just can’t explain how it feels, but when your little kid is having so much fun it just makes you have the time of your life too, it’s so contagious!

I love making things and I have made all of Nola’s costumes so far.  We will see, next year with two it may not happen, but if I have the time I hope I can because I really enjoy doing it!  This year we wanted Nola to choose what she wanted to be so she would be excited and have fun while being dressed up.  She really wasn’t sure what Halloween was all about still and so we would show her photos of kids in costumes and asked her frequently on what she thought.  At first we thought she’d be an animal, but then decided on being a care bear.  She seemed excited and it was settled!  CJ and I do like to be witty with our costume selections, but since she is older now and has a mind of her own we are all about her choosing something that will make her happy.  Would I prefer that she let us pick something more original, sure, but I think it’s important for her to choose even if that means she will be a princess for the next 5 years, aye, yai, yai.

This was our first year living in a house in a family neighborhood.  Even after looking online for the time for our neighborhood we weren’t sure when it started, if we had enough candy, what we would do when we were out trick or treating with Nola.  All things important of course.  Thankfully we figured it out and will be prepared for next year.  We saw kids out and about around 5:30 and took Nola out then.  It was so cold that evening and wanted to go as early as we could.  We weren’t sure how she was going to be going to each house, but she loved it!  Every time we left each house she would say, “this is fun!”  Every time, bless her heart!

We got back later and put our porch light on and got kids immediately.  Let me tell you, Nola had just as much fun handing out the candy as she did getting it!  So our fun night continued.  She would stand by our glass screen door just waiting for the kids.  Eventually CJ and Nola sat outside because she was too excited to be inside waiting for the kids, even though it was freezing out!  Thankfully the layout of our place is all open so I was able to watch Nola and CJ the entire time while I was making dinner and still be part of the fun.  The pumpkin candle was going and we just had the best evening.

Here are photos of the evening if you care to see:
